Blueprint Series: Increasing Findability and Interoperability: Introducing the Core Metadata Schema

Juliane Schneider and Nancy Hoebelheinrich

May 27, 2026

Why does standardized metadata matter? What makes it and how do we implement “good” metadata practices? And how do we make sure our practices are consistent with those of our communities?

The webinar will introduce you to the NIAID Blueprint’s Core Metadata Schema, and offer guidance on creating, mapping, and publishing authoritative extensions to it. Attendees will be equipped with specific examples to demonstrate how to make their own research data or a repository’s semantic resources more machine-actionable, enabling relevant external resources to draw insights from attendees’ repositories.

Blueprint Series: Connecting Research to Impact through Identifiers, Metadata and Citations

Keith Maull and Matt Mayernik

April 29, 2026

How do identifiers improve the findability of research assets? What role do citations play in measuring the impact of research outputs? How do we implement good citation recommendations that are consistent with domain-specific practices? Explore how the NIAID Blueprint recommendations address these questions.

Improving Impact through Identifiers, Metadata and Citations will introduce the crucial role that identifiers play in measuring the impact of all sorts of research assets. We will also explore strategies for creating citation recommendations that are easy for data users to find and follow. Participants will gain exposure to the various ways identifiers are indexed, and to metrics, tools and techniques for finding papers that reference relevant datasets and data repositories.

Blueprint Series: Intro to APIs

Doug Fils

March 31, 2026

How do we connect biomedical data systems to increase usage while providing adequate context? How is the emergent AI landscape placing new emphasis and demands on data services? How can API governance approaches reduce the burden on system administrators and developers? Explore how the NIAID Blueprint’s Application Programming Interface (API) recommendations address these questions.

Introduction to APIs will provide a high-level introduction to web API architecture focusing on guidance from the NIAID Blueprint. The presentation will introduce the role of URL patterns, versioning approaches, and more to support the development of long-term access to research metadata and data. API management and technical specifications will be presented, enabling you to create discoverable, self-documenting machine interfaces. Finally, the webinar will explore the integration of APIs within the AI landscape.

Blueprint Series: Introduction to Identifiers

Chris Erdmann

February 25, 2026

Have you wished for an easier way to showcase your repository’s capabilities? Wondered how repositories can better leverage submitted data, cross-reference datasets and metadata terms or more precisely cite organizations, grants, and contributors? This session addresses these challenges by exploring the role of persistent identifiers (PIDs).
